In 1910, the first service of St. Luke's was held.
A small group of dedicated people met in a parishioner's house to establish
a church to serve the needs of people on the south side of the North Saskatchewan
River just east of downtown. A church and rectory were built on 88th Avenue
in the Bonnie Doon area shortly after.
This building served the needs of the parish until 1958 when a new church
was built on the corner of 95th Avenue and 85th Street. A parish hall
and Sunday school wing were added to meet the needs of the young and growing
community.
St. Luke's has been blessed with dedicated clergy and laypeople that,
by their faith, devotion, enthusiasm and guidance have inspired many.
In its ninety plus years three Rectors -- Canon Hatfield, Cannon Wallace
and Canon Shell -- served twenty years as Rector of our parish. Our current
Incumbent, the Rev'd. Dan Van Alstine has served the parish since 1988.
St. Luke's is obviously a very stable place. The present congregation
has about one hundred and seventy five families. It is a multi-generational church with
great-grandparents, grandparents, children and grandchildren from some
families all worshipping together on Sunday mornings. Most visitors and
newcomers comment: "St. Luke's has a friendly, family atmosphere",
"it is a welcoming and comforting place", "the people made
me feel at home", "I left inspired."
St. Luke's places much emphasis on outreach. The parish is known for its
pastoral ministry to the sick and shut-ins. Regular services of worship
and hymn-sings and social activities are extended to local care facilities
for the elderly and disabled. As well, the church is wheelchair accessible.
St. Luke's is used on weekly basis by Cocaine Anonymous, Co-Anon Family
Group, Alcoholics Anonymous, Over-Eaters Anonymous, Nicotine Anonymous,
Women Supporting Women and two dance groups for young people. The Ecos
Choir also uses our facilities for its rehearsals.
The church offers support to the Primate's
World Relief and Development Fund and the Anglican Appeal. We also support
the Youth Emergency Shelter, the Bissell Centre, Habitat for Humanity
and the Edmonton Food Bank.
Parish groups include the Choir, the Altar Guild, the "Marthas and
Mary's" Woman's Group and the Lay Readers Association. Lay participation
in worship is actively encouraged.
Parish activities include Spring and Fall bazaars, an annual Shrove Tuesday
Pancake Supper, a Pie Social, Hot Dog Days, Christmas Pageant, Yard Sales
and Parish Suppers.
We worship on Sunday and Wednesday mornings at 10 am. The Ministry of Healing including
prayer, Laying on of Hands and Anointing are offered at all services when
the Eucharist is celebrated.
All are invited to attend. You will be welcomed with open arms in the
name of the Lord.
